Une biographie de Gerry Mulligan, écrite par Claude Carrière, illustrée par Cerminaro, accompagnée de 2 compact discs. À lui seul, le quartette qu'il dirigea en 1952-53, et qui établit également la gloire de Chet Baker, vaudrait que Gerry Mulligan eût une place importante au Panthéon du jazz. Cependant, ce saxophoniste nous donna en mille circonstances d'autres raisons de l'admirer et d'aimer sa production musicale. On se souvient notamment de son quartette avec le tromboniste Bob Brookmeyer, de son sextette avec le ténor Zoot Sims, de son superbe Concert Jazz Band, et de son enthousiasme à susciter ou à vivre des rencontres avec des artistes de tous styles, de Ben Webster à Paul Desmond, d'Astor Piazzola à Billie Holiday. Ce dandy à la silhouette d'éternel étudiant, ardent soliste aussi bien que chef d'orchestre perfectionniste (qui ne s'attirait pas que des amis...) a donné au jazz une oeuvre abondante et multiforme qui impose le respect.
